Sights Sights: St Mary's Church - Reformation Altar

Wittenberg - St Mary’s Church in Lutherstadt Wittenberg was where both Luther and Bugenhagen preached, and was closely associated with the historic events taking place in Wittenberg at that time. As a result, it came to be known as the ’mother church’ of the Reformation.
It was at St Mary’s that Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora got married and where their children were baptized. The oldest building in the town, the church is also known for the world-famous Reformation Altar. The altarpiece painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder shows the essentials of Protestant ecclesiastical life and the Reformation view of the church. The triptych also displays the three sacraments baptism, Holy Communion and confession. (mz)
