Sights Sights: Castle Church: Monument to the Reformation

Castle Church (also known as St Anne’s Church) was built under Frederick the Wise. It is famous for its artistic features and Frederick the Wise’s unique collection of sacred relics. During the Seven Years War, the church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt as a monument to the Reformation.
’A mighty fortress is our God’, the title of a well-known hymn by Martin Luther, can be seen in large letters on the tower. This hymn is highly symbolic for Protestants, being sung in times of great distress or in order to confess their faith.
Castle Church is also known for its magnificent door, on which Martin Luther is said to have posted his 95 Theses in 1517. Inside the church, visitors can see the last resting places of both Luther and Melanchthon. (mz)
